December 2020

Starting, as usual, with the weather, we've been enjoying near record-setting temperatures for this time of year, but now winter is on the horizon. Only cold temperatures though – it appears that any helpful moisture will be east of us – again!

And beyond the weather, what a strange holiday season this is proving to be. Nearly all special holiday events in the community have been canceled, including our own December Open House and Sugar Plum Sale.

We did hold the Member Appreciation Day, as scheduled, on October 25th, which turned out to be a dreadful weather day. Very cold, with freezing drizzle. In spite of that, 31 hardy souls came out to hear County Health Nurse, Edith Tarango's excellent presentation on the Corona Virus in Scott County. At the October board meeting, it was decided to cancel the December open house, so the Member Appreciation Day was the only special event held in 2020. It will be interesting to see what 2021 brings.

There is no holiday exhibit in the temporary gallery this year, but a most interesting display of America's First Ladies will remain in place for the next few weeks. Do come out and enjoy a walk through this unique part of American history.

And be sure to come out to visit the gift shop. We have some really neat new items, including 1940's pin-up girl paper dolls (Betty Grable, Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth!) and some great stocking stuffers: little tin boxes holding complete games of all kinds. You have to see these to believe how clever they are. Special sale prices on selected Jerry Thomas prints, books, jewelry and so much more.

A special recognition and thanks to the many who supported us financially through the Community Foundation Giving Day. The historical society donations totaled over $5,000, and we received $200 for having the second highest number of donors, and $425 in boosted funds from the Foundation. Additional year-end donations have also been received, and we are grateful every gift given.

As we come to the end of this challenging year, we thank you for the many ways you have supported the work we do. The Scott County Historical Society is alive and well, and we look forward to celebrating our 89th anniversary in 2021.

We are sad to say goodbye to Donis Mitchell, who passed away in October, and to Molly Williams, Norman Keyse, and Betty Schmidt, who passed away this month.

We will really miss Malcolm and Rozann Rodenberg, who have moved to Salina. They have been active members across many years.

And please welcome new members Rodney and Elaine Hopper of Scott City.

Merry Christmas – Happy New Year – Stay Well!
