SCOTT COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER

SEPTEMBER 2018

Have you ever noticed the difference between August winds and September winds?  It seems like Mother Nature knows when to flip her calendar and send out notice that Fall is on the way.  September can be (and usually is) hot, windy and dusty, but it just feels different than August.  I can’t explain it, but as I begin this newsletter in late August, It looks and feels like a September day.  Ok – got the weather out of the way.  On to the good stuff!

It’s a little early for a newsletter, but we’ll be hosting at least two important events in September, and we want to make sure our members are aware and invited.  The Quilts of Valor organization has asked to hold their veteran’s honor ceremony in our meeting room again and will do so on Saturday, September 8th, at 2:00 p.m.  This meaningful ceremony is something you will appreciate and long-remember.  Please plan to support this special recognition of our veterans.

September will also mark the 140th anniversary of the Battle of Punished Woman’s Fork.  Plans are being finalized for a gathering of a small group of Northern Cheyenne descendants and some of the descendants of the U. S. Cavalry who were involved in the last battle between Native Americans and U. S. military troops in the State of Kansas.  This battle took place near present-day Historic Lake Scott State Park on September 27, 1878.  The public is invited to “Walk with the Spirits” at the battle site around 4:00 p.m. on September 27th, where the story of the battle will be told.  The public is also invited to gather at El Quartelejo Museum and the Jerry Thomas Gallery & Collection (902 W. 5th Street) from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 29th, to enjoy guest speakers and ceremonial dance performers.  We know many of you look forward to the annual “Walk with the Spirits” event, and this year will be even more meaningful with these special guests.

We were sorry to hear of Joe Beaver’s passing.  Joe worked closely with the Society to help design items for the gift shop during those first years when every purchase was weighed against a nearly non-existing budget.  We know he cut corners to help us, and the business has continued membership across the years.  Welcome new membership: The City of Scott City – another ‘business’ whose support is greatly appreciated.

Our visitors have enjoyed the Temporary Gallery’s Dust Bowl display created by the kids during Pioneer Camp, but it needs to come down.  If you haven’t been out to see it, you need to do that soon.  Soon!

Once again – We need photos of our military veterans – any branch of service – any era.  We’d like to do a military display in the near future.  Please help us!
