We have wonderful events scheduled for the summer and you won’t want to miss any of them.  The first special program will be Saturday, June 2nd, at 2:00 p.m. when Stephanie Fisher will present the last of the Trunk Talks, but this time it will be designed especially for adults.  The June trunk, furnished by the Kansas State Historical Society is Kansas Women and Their Quilts.  We’re calling this program “Pieces of the Past,” and plan to display some of the quilts in our collection.  All ages are invited to stop in during the week of June 5 – 9 to explore this trunk with the hands on activities that come with it.  Stephanie will be available each day from 1:00 to 5:00 to talk about the trunk.

We will also offer the Historic Sites Guided Bus Tour on Sunday, June 3rd.  This tour will leave the museum parking lot at 1:00 p.m. and will include Battle Canyon, El Quartelejo Pueblo Ruins, other points of interest in the park and the Duff Buffalo Tour.  It is free and open to the public, but you need to make reservations.  Please call the museum 872-5912, or Dennie 874-1559 as soon as possible.  Don’t miss this chance to enjoy an excellent presentation of our unique history.

Two other outstanding events are on the schedule as well, and neither has been offered to you in the past.  At 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 16th, five area military veterans will be honored with a ceremony called Quilts of Valor, here at the museum.  The ceremony will be conducted by the High Plains Quilts of Valor organization.  It is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

And on Sunday, July 8th, at 2:00 p.m. the 35th Infantry Division Band from Olathe, Kansas, will present a brass quintet concert at the museum.  This group will be touring the area for a week and, after visiting the museum recently, decided it would be a great location for their concert.  This also is free and open to the public.

Coming this summer is our first ever, Pioneer Camp, with songsmith and educator, Thad Beach, June 28th – 30th from 1:30 to 4:30.  Kids will enjoy hands on activities, music, songs, games, snacks, and crafts themed around the Dust Bowl song by Mr. Beach, Nothin’ Fancy but We had Enough. Saturday afternoon will be open to the public to view the new museum exhibit that the kids will create during their camp.  This FREE camp is for kids ages 8 and up (or turning 8 this summer…) and is made possible through a grant from the Scott County Travel and Tourism. Pre-registration is required due to limited space.  Members: you are invited to sign up now before registration is open to the public!  Call Stephanie today, 620-872-5912.
