September 2014 Newsletter

SCOTT COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

And just like that, summer is over! Well, maybe not officially, but with the turn of the calendar page, school is in full swing and fall schedules have resumed. And we have new hours at El Quartelejo Museum and the Jerry Thomas Gallery – We are now open 1-5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Please note: If you have visitors or know of someone who can’t visit during those hours, we are happy to provide off-hour tours, if someone from the staff is available. Arrangements may be made by calling Dennie: 620-874-1559 or Patsi: 620-874-2016.

Summer visitation was good, with guests from many states and some foreign countries. We truly do have a treasure in our own backyard, and far too many local citizens have never been out to enjoy and appreciate it. Nothing is more effective than word-of-mouth recommendations, so please – spread the word!

There are some very special events coming up. For many years, a few local historians have met at Battle Canyon on the evening of September 27th, to walk the battlefield and relive that old story. This year YOU are invited to join them. Just be at Battle Canyon around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 27th to share this experience with those who know and cherish this local historic event.

The free historic sites guided bus tour may be offered on Sunday, September 28th, if there is enough interest. Call the museum for information and to make reservations – SOON.

Sunday, October 19th has been set for the annual Membership Appreciation Day. The 2 p.m. gathering will include a special speaker and refreshments. Donald Blakeslee, an expert on prehistoric and early historic Plains life, will present the program, Kansas, BC. You are welcome to bring artifacts for him to identify. Mr. Blakeslee is with the Department of Anthropology at Wichita State University.

And looking further down the road, December 14th has been set for the annual Holiday Open House and Sugar Plum Sale. We are counting on your special candies and cookies for this annual fundraiser. The Temporary Gallery will feature Kay Mohler’s collection of Precious Moments figurines. Christmas is truly filled with precious moments and memories, so that will be a great theme for the holidays.

For you early shoppers, the museum gift shop has great gift ideas. We have recently added many Native American crafts, dolls, toys and books. We’re also selling Tonja’s Toffee, which is nicely packaged for gift giving. And, of course, we have the full range of Jerry Thomas wildlife and western art prints, ready for framing. We’re adding new items almost weekly, so check us out.
